Ballina MP Urges Government To Reject Kmart Application For Anzac Morning Trading (01/03/2010)
Ballina MP Don Page says Kmarts application to open on ANZAC Day in the morning should be rejected by the NSW Government.
“ANZAC Day is a commemoration of all those who have served our country, over 102,000 of whom died in that service,” he said.
“It is not just another holiday for people to go shopping,” he said.
“ANZAC Day services and remembrance ceremonies are held across the country on ANZAC morning and retailers like Kmart should not open as a mark of respect,” Mr Page said.
“Kmart and other retailers are allowed to open after 1pm on that day and that’s how it should remain,” he said.
“It would be disrespectful and unnecessary for Kmart and other retailers to open while our diggers were marching on ANZAC Day and our community is paying tribute to all those who have served.
“I urge the NSW Government to reject Kmarts application to open on ANZAC Day morning,” he said.
