Shadow Minister Media Releases
More Jobs In Regional NSW Under Libs & Nats Jobs Action Plan (31/03/2010)
Job prospects in NSW will improve under the Liberals & Nationals Jobs Action Plan, the Shadow Minister for Small Business, Don Page, said today.
“The NSW Liberals & Nationals’ plan involves the creation of 100,000 new jobs by 2013 by rewarding employers who put on new staff,” Mr Page said.
“Our Jobs Action Plan will provide a payroll tax rebate of $4,000 per full-time employee for the first 100,000 new payroll tax paying jobs created in NSW,” Mr Page said.
“This is great news for rural and regional areas that have high unemployment rates,” he said.
“There should be more jobs in regional NSW which will help local economies enormously and provide increased opportunities for young people,” Mr Page said.
“The rebate will be calculated on an average wage of $72,500. In many regional areas actual wages are much less than $72,500 so it will be possible for a business to employ more than one person and still obtain the rebate.
“This initiative is designed to stimulate the economy and get more people working and that is a good thing for NSW.
“By giving employers rebates on payroll tax, we will create more jobs by supporting small and medium-sized businesses,” Mr Page said.
“The NSW Liberals & Nationals are committed to improving the economy of NSW after the Labor Government has let it slide for years,” he said.
“Over the last 10 years we have had the lowest level of job creation of any Australian state or territory.
“The Australian Bureau of Statistics shows total employment in NSW has grown by 15.1 percent over the last 10 years, compared to 36 percent in Queensland, 29.4 percent in Western Australian and 25 percent in Victoria,” Mr Page said.
“The plan by the Liberals & Nationals to create an additional 100,000 jobs by providing rebates on payroll tax is predicted to translate to a rise in economic activity of up to $3.6 billion.
“Payroll tax in NSW is the highest in Australia and is a burden on employment growth so I am sure this plan to give businesses putting on full-time staff a $4,000 payroll tax break will be well received,” he said.
“It will also lower the unemployment rate by up to 0.3 percent because it will create 100,000 new jobs,” Mr Page said.
“This Jobs Action Plan is good news for NSW which has languished under an ineffective and incompetence State Labor Government,” Mr Page said.
